Organization tips for small closets

Owning a walk-in closet can be said to be anyone’s dream, but for the most part, you have to make do with what you have. If remodeling is not in the cards, there’s a way to make the most out of the closet you do have. Here are a few tips to help you keep your wardrobe organized and functional, no matter how small it is.

  1. Clean out

Getting everything out of your closet is the first obvious step. The aim is to get rid of everything that you haven’t worn in a year, no matter how much you love it. We often hold on to clothes hoping that we’ll one day lose (or add) weight but never do. By only keeping the clothes that you do wear, you’re able to free up space in your tiny closet.

  1. Decorate

A wardrobe does not have to be bland. Consider getting a fresh coat of paint, perhaps in a different color or having wallpaper or stencil. You can equally add or remove shelves to increase the functionality.

  1. Plan accordingly

Though it may take time, plan out in your mind what goes where before putting the clothes back in. Not everything in your closet needs to be there. Do you have drawers under the bed or in another part of the house where you can store things?

For example, if it’s spring, your fur coat doesn’t need to be there. Putting away off-season clothes in another part of your house is best. It gives you much-needed space. Be sure to place them in an airtight bag or container to keep dirt and bugs out.

  1. Get extra storage

There are quite a few options when it comes to closet organizers. You can draw up your plan or get ideas online. Depending on your time and money, you can buy the materials (perhaps wood, hanging bars, and wires) and create the closet you wish to have of getting a professional to do it. Anyone including the Aurora Personal Injury Lawyers can do this. Given that this is something you’ll have for a while, there’s no such thing as too much effort.

  1. Think vertical

There are plenty of choices available when it comes to shoe-organizers and other items that can be stuck to your wall. Use the closet wall or back of the door to hang not just your shoes but anything that can be rolled and placed in each compartment. Your scarfs, belts, jewelry and the like can go here.

As a takeaway, get additions that help you hang multiple things in a small amount of space. Most of all, once it’s organized, keep it that way. A messy closet can be overwhelming.
